Традиционные линзы ограничены возможностью фокусировки на объекте только в одной фокальной плоскости за раз, в большей или меньшей степени размывая всё, что находится позади или перед этим объектом. Такой эффект придаёт изображениям глубину, что уместно для портретов, но для чёткого просмотра полной сцены в кадре может понадобиться объединение нескольких снимков с разным фокусным расстоянием.
По словам доцента CMU Мэтью О’Тула (Matthew O’Tool), разработанная учёными университета система «пространственно изменяющейся автофокусировки» сочетает в себе ряд технологий, которые «позволяют камере решать, какие части изображения должны быть резкими — по сути, предоставляя каждому пикселю свою собственную крошечную регулируемую линзу».
Исследователи разработали «вычислительную линзу», которая сочетает в себе линзу Ломана — две изогнутые кубические линзы, смещающиеся относительно друг друга для настройки фокуса, — с фазовым пространственным модулятором света — устройством, которое контролирует преломление света в каждом пикселе, — что позволяет системе одновременно фокусироваться на разной глубине.

Система использует два метода автофокусировки: контрастную автофокусировку (CDAF), которая делит изображения на области с независимой регулировкой резкости, и фазовую автофокусировку (PDAF), которая определяет, находится ли объект в фокусе и какое направление фокусировки следует скорректировать.
По словам профессора CMU Асвина Санкаранараянана (Aswin Sankaranarayanan), эта экспериментальная система «может коренным образом изменить то, как камеры видят мир».
